Strategy & the Balanced Scorecard - A critical link

In this article author, management consultant, and Balanced Scorecard expert Paul Niven focuses on the most challenging aspects of business - strategy. While the study of business strategy and its development has generated a wide range of perspective and a wealth of material, the author points out that true success is entirely dependent upon the successful execution of strategy.   Using the Balanced Scorecard in the Public Sector

In this article author, management consultant, and Balanced Scorecard expert Paul Niven argues that the pace of change today has impacted all categories of organizations - private, nonprofit, and public sector organizations - and requires them to focus on strategy execution. The Balanced Scorecard was born out of the realization that organizations need a system that allowed them to take advantage of intangible assets, and balanced both financial and non-financial indicators of success, thereby increasing the odds of strategy execution.

Cost Management and the Balanced Scorecard

In this article, author, management consultant and Balanced Scorecard expert Paul Niven argues that the discipline of Cost Management must evolve to face the realities of the new economy and meet the rapidly changing information needs of today's decision makers. Cost Management, like finance, is finding out that the new mandate calls for providing the information companies need to produce the value their customers demand.

The introduction of a Balanced Scorecard program is a major enterprise performance
management initiative or change program, involving considerable time and money for the full design and rollout. Hence, it is important to develop a clear idea of the business benefits.

This calls for building a compelling business case. When business faces a question of survival, as one example in the article shows, this is probably made easier.

In this article, author, management consultant and Balanced Scorecard expert Paul Niven focuses on one aspect in any Balanced Scorecard program that is crucial but neglected - training.

Training leads to a better educated and motivated workforce and can also produce dramatic improvements in bottom line results. This holds for the Balanced Scorecard as well. In this article, the author asserts that an organization’s Balanced Scorecard will benefit greatly from a well-planned, carefully constructed, and skillfully delivered training program.

A large number of companies successfully use some form of Balanced Scorecard to drive their
performance management. One reason for this probably lies in the fact that the bottom line of a company is actually fairly easy to describe. However, building and implementing a Balanced Scorecard Management System within a public sector organization presents a challenge that is different from what private sector organizations encounter.

Why Nonprofits Need a Balanced Scorecard

In this article, author, management consultant and Balanced Scorecard expert Paul Niven argues that there is great pressure on nonprofit organizations to build new and improved performance measurement systems so that they can deliver transparency and accountability that is being demanded. The Balanced Scorecard can be the system that provides real insights into a nonprofit's operations and helps it focus on performance and strategy implementation. While many nonprofits have recognized the inherent benefits of the Balanced Scorecard, there is a reluctance to embrace the tool.

The USPS Strategic Planning team believes that the sheer size of the organization required the articulation of the fewest possible objectives, so that things are kept simple.

  Sculpting the Perfect Balanced Scorecard

In this article, author, management consultant and Balanced Scorecard expert Paul Niven sounds a strong note of caution against overloading Balanced Scorecards with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Strategic Objectives.

Once early adopters of the Balanced Scorecard started seeing results, organizations were convinced that more objectives and measures would make performance management even more effective. This led to overcrowded Strategy Maps and Balanced Scorecard Maps that failed to offer a coherent picture of strategy and strategy execution.

In this entertaining article, author, management consultant and Balanced Scorecard expert Paul Niven takes a closer look at movie-making to borrow lessons for making management meetings better.

Ultimately, movies are all about stories and how they progress, scene by scene. While volumes have been written on creating winning scenes, expert screenwriters have found a way to keep it very simple…and very effective. Just as scenes can drive a movie’s progression, meetings can drive an organization’s performance management.

Learning and Growth Perspective

In this article - the last of a four part series - author, management consultant and Balanced Scorecard expert Paul Niven discusses the need for a Learning and Growth Perspective in a Balanced Scorecard. The other three parts focus on the Financial, Customer and Internal Process perspectives. The author begins by focusing on the need for a Learning and Growth Perspective. Organizations that seek to create a culture of performance management typically wish to create flawless processes, fulfill customer expectations, and create value for financial stakeholders. To achieve these goals, organizations need a strong foundation. People, the author argues, provide this foundation. The knowledge and talents of people are the intangibles that account for upward of 80 per cent of value creation in modern organizations. In the ultimate analysis, committed and capable people dictate the success or failure of an organization.

The Role of the CEO and the Senior Team

It is an acknowledged fact that the active support and involvement of the senior management team is the most important success factor in an Enterprise Performance Management or Balanced Scorecard initiative.
The CEO and the senior team collectively own the strategy. When the CEO and senior team fail to own the initiative, the Balanced Scorecard becomes merely one more performance improvement tool among many. Only when this role is fulfilled can organizations expect to realize the potential of the Balanced Scorecard as a tool for organizational transformation and breakthrough performance. Then, the Balanced Scorecard becomes a true strategy management framework.
